St. Mary's Mission changes location of Saturday Vigil Mass

St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Mission has moved the location of its Saturday evening Vigil Mass from Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church to East Coweta High School on Ga. Hwy. 154 in Sharpsburg. The move was effective earlier this month.

The high school is also the location for the church's Sunday morning Mass, held at 10 a.m.

The move was caused by significant growth in numbers and the lack of a building for worship. Parishioners have been gathering for special Masses in an old tin barn on their property on Lower Fayetteville Road, which adjoins Cokes Chapel's.

Father Dan Fleming, administrator of St. Mary Magdalene, said the continuing growth of the young faith community had prompted the necessity of seeking larger space.

"It's a good problem to have for a new congregation, Fleming said. "Our mission numbers keep rising and we are pretty much at overflow for our Saturday evening Mass at the chapel."

Fleming said he was grateful to Pastor John Hagan and the people of Cokes Chapel for sharing their facility.

"The two congregations have formed a close friendship," Fleming said, " and will continue to share special worship services together such as Ash Wednesday."

For several years, St. Mary Magdalene and Cokes Chapel have joined forces for an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service and distribution of ashes.
