Historic Salem Camp Meeting will be held Sept. 26, 27 in Conyers

The Rev. Dr. William L. Self will preach camp meeting services at the historic Salem Camp Ground, Friday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m. The services will include time-tested gospel singing and original anthems sung by the Meridian Chorale directed by Steven Darsey.

The services are free and open to the public, presented by Meridian Herald, a nonprofit organization supporting worship and culture.

Bill Self is among America's most distinguished Baptists. Currently pastor of Johns Creek Baptist Church in Alpharetta, he was previously pastor of Atlanta's Wieuca Road Baptist Church.

Salem Camp Ground and its annual summer camp meeting were given a feature article in the August 1996 issue of The Smithsonian. Camp Meetings began in the 19th century South, where farmers, when the crops were laid by, would go "camping" with their families and friends for a week or more. They invited preachers, and the days and evenings were filled with fiery preaching and impassioned singing of Gospel songs.

Salem Camp Ground is just east of Conyers, off I 20, exit 84 (Salem Road), a 40-minute drive from Atlanta. Reservations at the Salem Inn are available by calling 770-786-6841. Directions and other information are available at www.meridianherald.org, which also features biographies and pictures of Rev. Self and Dr. Darsey.
