Chiefs prevail 20-12 in 2003 opener

The McIntosh Chiefs opened the 2003 football season the same way they began 2002 — with a win over Eagle’s Landing.

The Chiefs came from behind with two fourth-quarter scores for a 20-12 win, as Thomas Beck scored three touchdowns. His second score gave McIntosh a 13-12 lead midway through the final period, and when the Golden Eagles faced a fourth down on the next possession, they went for the first and were stopped, allowing the Chiefs to take over deep in Eagle’s Landing territory and put another score on the board. The defense then recovered a fumble to seal the win.

Landmark Christian: Opening at home, the War Eagles rolled to a 28-0 win over Cross Keys with 349 yards of total offense. Dylan Hanes rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns, and Alex Mortensen threw for 166 yards and two scores. Both scoring passes were to Eric Worrell, the team’s leading receiver with six catches.

The Landmark offense scored on four of its first six drives through three quarters, controlling the ball with drives of 13, 10 and nine plays.

Nick Taussig recorded 11 tackles and one sack for the War Eagle defense, and Bryan Houston had seven tackles. Blaine Gable added a sack, and Hanes forced a fumble.

Fayette Christian: The Falcons ran their record to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play with a 34-24 victory over Shiloh Hills Saturday afternoon at Whitewater Middle School.

Jared Abadie rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns and threw a scoring pass to Terrence Dunston. Brandon Gable opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff return for a score.

Jacob Montano led the Falcons with nine tackles, while Jason McEver recorded eight tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Fayette County: A 37-yard field goal by Hart Pearson was all the scoring the Tigers could muster in their home opener, as Douglas County cruised to a 40-3 victory.

Starr’s Mill: In their 2003 debut at the Georgia Dome, as the Panthers fell 30-0 to Brookwood.
