Peachtree City UMC offers grief recovery group each Wednesday

GriefShare, a grief recovery support group sponsored by Peachtree City United Methodist Church, meets each Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m. in room 306 at the Robinson Road campus, 225 Robinson Rd. in Peachtree City. Childcare is available for children through fifth grade with reservations. There is a $15 workbook fee but scholarships are available for those in need.

"GriefShare is for people grieving the death of a loved one," explains Lisa Mahaffey, one of the group's facilitators. "It's a place where grievers can be around people who understand how they feel and the pain of their loss. The group is open to anyone in the community regardless of where they may be in the healing process."

GriefShare uses a video seminar series that features some of the nation's foremost Christian experts on grief and recovery topics. Videos are stand alone so participants may join at any time and not feel lost.

"The 14-week support group will be offered back to back so there should always be something available for those wanting to join," Mahaffey said.

The video seminars are combined with a workbook and group discussion time to allow participants to talk about the content of the seminar, about how they are dealing with the death of their loved one, "as well as anything else that's on their hearts," Mahaffey said.

Ed Craven is the co-facilitator, along with Mahaffey.

"Ed and I felt a calling to reach out and help others as we have both lived through and recovered from the loss of a spouse in the past. We know what it is like to go through the grief process," Mahaffey said. "Our goal is to provide a safe place where grievers can find comfort, understanding, encouragement and healing. It is comforting for grievers to find other people who will listen, validate, and encourage them to help them through the process of mourning and recovery and that is what we hope to do."

Mahaffey said she was really excited to be a part of something like GriefShare. "I've prayed for a way I could bring comfort and encouragement to others in grief and this is such an exciting opportunity and answer to prayer. I know God will do great things through this new ministry," she said.

Those interested in attending may call Craven, 770-632-6273 or Mahaffey, 678-817-5641.
