Wood - our renewable resource

The Georgia Forestry Commission asks that you take a moment, and look about your surroundings. What things can you identify that come from trees? What things do you use each day come from wood?

More than 5,000 products are made from wood, wood fiber, and wood chemicals. This is the result of much experimentation and research. Today, when a tree is cut almost nothing is wasted.

Even small pieces, odds and ends, sawdust, and shavings are used in the manufacturing of the various wood products. The many products include news paper and paper products, cellophane, plastics, insulation, lacquers, photographic film, carpeting, dyes, drugs, fabrics for clothing, furniture, boxes, cartons, cosmetics, toothpaste, paint thinner, perfumes, soap, rubber products, syrup, varnishes, waxes, chewing gum, flavorings, printing ink, shoe polish, and adhesives. The list goes on and on.

Wood, despite competitive products, holds a very important place in our lives, because of its attractiveness, durability, adaptability and economy.

The country's supply of wood is assured by wise logging methods, reforestation and good forest management practices. The Georgia Forestry Commission works daily with landowners in helping them to realize the maximum potential of their property through wise stewardship practices, while insuring our future wood supply.
