Hwy. 74 development picks up

After years of hibernation, development is increasing at a dizzying pace along Ga. Highway 74 north from Peachtree City to I-85.

Fulton schools excell on SATs

With a system average of 1049, Fulton County has once again excelled on the SAT. The 2003 Fulton scores surpass 2002 scores by 10 points, with the system reporting a 23-point increase above the national average and a 65-point increase above the Georgia average.

Union City's millage rate for year 2003 remains the same

There will be no increase in the tax millage rate this year in Union City. According to Union City City Councilmen last Tuesday night, the city of Union City had an increased growth of $18.67 million which represents 40 percent of the assessed value on the total increase in the tax digest.

Rivertown Road rezoning refused

An attempt to rezone 70 acres of land along Rivertown Road from R-1 residential to R-2 residential was shot down Monday night at Fairburn's regular City Council meeting.

Fulton County students in grades 2, 3, 5, and 8 will take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) the week of September 5, with results expected back from the testing company in November.

The Union City City Council entered into an agreement last week to approve a contract with Fulton County for animal control services.

Old National Highway subject of meetings

Fulton County planners will hold public meetings in September, October, November, and December to discuss the Old National Highway Livable Centers Initiative Project. All will be held at the Heritage Elementary School, 2600 Jolly Drive, College Park, on the following dates and times:

Night school now regestering Fultun County High students

Fulton County high school students have an opportunity to earn additional high school credits by attending a nine-week night school program. Early registration for the first session is ongoing until September 5, with late registration continuing until classes begin September 23. Courses will be offered at McClarin High School in South Fulton County.

Senior services receives grant

Fulton County has received a $2.6 million grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission to continue providing senior citizen services next year.

Weekend travel expected to be heavy

Officials at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport expect larger than normal crowds this week as travelers get away for the last holiday of the summer. Anticipated passenger traffic for the 2003 holiday period is up nearly 6.9 percent over the same period last year. More than 1.1 million passengers are expected to travel through Hartsfield during the days leading to and following Labor Day.

Georgia's dove hunting season opens in September and often is seen as the official start to the fall hunting season.

Community sports briefs

The Tyrone Recreation Department is conducting classes for Pee Wee Tennis (ages 4-7) and Youth Tennis (ages 8-14) each Monday through Sept. 8 at the Shamrock Park tennis courts. Pee Wee classes are 4-5 p.m. and Youth classes are 5-6 p.m. Cost is $25 for the four-week session.
