Author Magdalene Breaux shares experiences with Fayette Writers

On Aug. 9, the Fayette Writers Group was honored by the presence of Magdalene Breaux, author of "Imaginary Playmate" and "The Family Curse." She is currently negotiating the film rights to the latter. Breaux is a native of New Orleans and grew up hearing tales of witchcraft in the Bayou area. The intriguing heritage of that area sets the stage for her stories.

Breaux is a graduate of the University of New Orleans and has coordinated the First Sweet Auburn Literary festival in Atlanta. She travels the country promoting titles published by her company, Breaux Books, LLC, as well as others. She is committed to helping others who are pursuing their dreams of the written word. She stated that she had learned a great deal from costly mistakes. Mistakes that were costly, not only monetarily but time consuming and emotional as well.

Her presentation included information on the various areas of writing and marketing your works. She is well versed on editors and predators, having had a number of experiences she will never forget. Breaux provided information about wholesalers, distributors and which printers were the most reasonable and at the same time did the best work. She also named a couple printers to stay away from (one of those costly mistakes). One of them was already known to most of the members of the groups but reinforcement of those uglies is needed.

Breaux said that you need a marketing plan and cited ways of saving money in the process. When asked what advice she had to offer other writers she stated, "When dealing with others, treat writing as a business and be aware because the uglies are out there. Most of all, have a creative heart and have fun."

The Fayette Writers Group was very appreciative of Breaux's visit and for sharing the valuable lessons she has learned. To engage Breaux to speak to your group or organization regarding the publishing industry or book promotions, phone 770-842-4792.
