CCSU downs Lightning in exhibition The Clayton College & State University men's soccer team opened its exhibition season with 7-1 victory Sunday over the Lightning Soccer Club U-18 squad at Laker Field. Newcomer Anthony Wright, a junior from Newcastle, England, led the offensive attack, scoring three goals in his Clayton State debut. The Lakers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Wright and sophomore Scott LeClerc of Jonesboro. Sophomore Tadd Sutton of Conyers and senior Vinnie Valez of New York City had assists on the two goals. The Lightning Club cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Josh Landis before Wright pocketed his second goal of the half, off an assist from Alex Mosley of Augusta, minutes before intermission. In the second half, Clayton State took control with four goals. Ryan McArdle of Augusta scored two goals in the period, while Wright scored his third on a penalty kick and LeClerc added his second. Mosley, junior David Dowling of South Africa, and Pa'Alasan Jahumpa of London all had assists in the second half. Clayton State will open the regular season Sept. 1, traveling to face Lees-McRae in a 7 p.m. match. Clayton State's first regular season home match will be Saturday, Sept. 6, hosting Mars Hill in a 2 p.m. match.
