Winpak Films reaches one year worked without a recordable injury Winpak Films, Inc., in Senoia has reached a safety milestone achieved by few corporations. July 10, 2003, marked one calendar year worked without a recordable injury. The one year injury-free milestone eclipses Winpak's previous best record of injury-free days by 216 days. "This is truly world-class safety performance, an all-time record for WFI, and an accomplishment that we are very proud of," said Kevin Byers, Winpak Films' president. "Our employees are the ones responsible for the safety performance here at Winpak Films." "As with any successful safety program, Winpak's goal is to be injury-free," said Larry Robertson, Winpak Films' Occupational Safety Manager. "What is equally important is to stay the course and continue to improve one's safety systems and culture." Winpak's approach to safety focuses on people. Studies have shown that unsafe acts are the cause of 96 percent of all accidents at work. Because the actions and attitudes of employees are essential to working safely, it is necessary to demonstrate the company's commitment to safety and to ensure that employees adopt this commitment as their very own. At Winpak Films, safety is placed at the top of the agenda of every staff meeting, and all employees, as well as contractors, participate in regularly scheduled safety meetings. Because of management's special responsibility for preventing injuries, all Winpak supervisors and managers are personally involved in safety training and safety audits. Great attention is also given to the observation and elimination of unsafe acts. If they go unnoticed, they will sooner or later lead to accidents. This is why all incidents, including near hits are reported and investigated at Winpak. "Our vision for the year 2003 is to be able to look back and see zero recordable injuries and to be well on our way to reaching 1,000,000 man hours worked with no lost-time incidents," noted Robertson. When goals are achieved, all employees are rewarded as all employees contribute to achieving the goals. "With the summer months, vacations, and outdoor recreational activities now upon us, it is very easy for us to be distracted from the task at hand and to take our minds off of working and playing safely," said Robertson. The true test of any successful Safety program is whether or not people are working safely and preventing injury long term. Winpak says, "We can!"
