Coweta schools get defibrillators

Nurses, athletic trainers and administrators from Coweta County middle and high schools received training in new AED defibrillators Thursday.

The training - provided by a Cintas first aid and AED instructor - built on the CPR training of the 20 people attending last week's training, held at the Board's Jackson Street offices.

Board member Steve Bedrosian was in attendance. Bedrosian, a former Atlanta Braves player, was the board member who made the motion last year to purchase the defibrillators for Coweta County schools and have them on hand in schools and near athletic fields.

The board agreed, purchasing the battery-powered units for every middle and high school in Coweta County. When applied, the sophisticated units monitor and report on heart rate, advise the operator through computerized voice instructions and, if necessary, allow operators to supply an electric shock to restart the heart.

Early use of the units in the case of ventricular fibrillation can save a life, instructor Dave Hawthorne told trainees Thursday.
