Community sports briefs

The Tyrone Recreation Department is conducting classes for Pee Wee Tennis (ages 4-7) and Youth Tennis (ages 8-14) each Monday through Sept. 8 at the Shamrock Park tennis courts. Pee Wee classes are 4-5 p.m. and Youth classes are 5-6 p.m. Cost is $25 for the four-week session.

The Fayette County Recreation Department is looking for dependable scorekeepers who want to earn extra money for a fun job. Needed for Monday through Thursday, 7-10 p.m. Evening schedule typically consists of three games per night. Learn the rules of basketball, softball and more. Call 770-461-9714 for more information.

The Peachtree City Youth Basketball Association is conducting registration for the 2003-04 season at Kedron Field House on the following dates and times: Saturday, Aug. 23, noon-4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 24, 1-4:30 p.m. Registration is for boys and girls in grades 1-12. The Fayette County 4-H Shotgun Club will have their range open for clay target shooting as a fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the 4-H shotgun range off Ga. Highway 85, about seven miles south of Fayetteville. Cost is a $5 donation per round of 25 targets or a $10 donation for three rounds. High schoolers and younger are $2.50 per round. Price does not include ammunition, which is available at the range for $5 per box of 25. Eye and ear protection is required and also available at the range. The Soccer Centre in Fayetteville announces registration for its Fall Indoor Mupper Soccer league for ages 4-5. Games will be played Sept. 12 through Oct. 24 on weekday evenings and Friday evenings, on an enclosed AstroTurf field with no rainouts. Registration fee is $55, which includes a team T-shirt. The first annual "Whupper" Lee Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, with a 2 p.m. shotgun start at Orchard Hills Golf Club in Newnan. The tournament is open to anyone who wishes to support Auburn University, the Coweta-Fayette Alumni Club and the club's scholarship fund. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the chapter's scholarship fund named in memory of Bill "Whupper" Lee, a 1937 Auburn graduate and resident of Newnan. Single entry fees are $75 per player, which includes a post-tournament barbecue. Corporate and individual sponsorships are available. The post-tournament dinner will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to non-playing guests for $12 per person. All fees are tax-deductible. Registration continues through Aug. 24 for the fall junior tennis league at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The fall season begins Oct. 3 and runs through Nov. 16. Players must know how to serve and keep score. Age divisions are by school grade (2-5, 6-8 and 9-12) with a minimum age of 7. Matches will be played Fridays at 4 p.m. for grades 2-5, Saturdays at 9:30 for grades 9-12 and Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. for grades 6-8. Information and registration forms are available at the Tennis Center and through coaches or tennis facilities in the area.

An hour of yoga will be offered each week through Aug. 27 by the Tyrone Recreation Department. Classes are from 7-8 p.m. in the basement of the Tyrone Police Department. Cost is $80. To register, call 770-487-4694.

The Fayette County Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Whitewater Rafting Adventure Saturday, Sept. 6, on the Nantahala River in North Carolina. Cost is $60 per person, and transportation is provided. Minimum weight of each participant is 60 lbs. The trip is "perfect for families, first-timers and informal staff outings," according to Recreation Department. Deadline for registration is Aug. 22, and space is limited. The Georgia Chapter of Certified Residential Specialists' seventh annual Charity Golf Classic is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Spivey Golf Club in Jonesboro. Proceeds will benefit People Making Progress, a private nonprofit organization that assists with supported employment and supported living for people with developmental disabilities in metro Atlanta. Numerous prizes for participants. Fees are $100 per player or $300 for a foursome. There is a 10-percent Early Bird Discount for signup and payment before Aug. 1. Each foursome receives a commemorative gift, greens fees, golf cart fees, a continental breakfast, a goody bag, and an awards ceremony. The first annual Tri-Peachtree City triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13. The race begins at 7 a.m. at Drake Field, next to City Hall, and consists of a half-mile swim in Lake Peachtree, a 12-mile bike ride through the city and a 3.8-mile run. The event ends at Drake Field. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers overall as well as the top three in each age group and the top three masters finishers. The Fayette County Youth Softball Association will hold its annual board meeting and election of officers and directors Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Fayette County Recreation Activities House at the Kiwanis Field at 108 Old Senoia Road. Nominations will be accepted from the floor.

The annual Fayetteville Knights of Columbus' Dennis Crumley Charity Golf Tournament is Friday, Sept. 26, at Rivers Edge Golf Club. A 9 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled in a Lauderdale scramble format, open to foursome, twosomes or singles. Cost is $55 per player and includes green fees, cart, range balls and lunch. SouthSide Pioneers Track & Field Club is looking for any eligible athletes (ages 7 and up, including Masters athletes) interested in becoming part of a new local cross-country program in the Fayetteville area. Youth athletes (ages 7-18) will compete locally in a quest to qualify for the 2003 National Cross-Country Junior Olympics Dec. 14 in Albequerque, N.M., while all other athletes will compete at the National Club Cross-Country Championships in Dec. 7 in North Carolina. Open tryouts and registration for the Team USA Junior Olympic 14-under fastpitch squad is underway. All team members are required to obtain weekly private instruction, maintain an independent weekly workout schedule and attend team practices/tournaments 3 weekends per month. The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl ACC/SEC Challenge is Aug. 21-24 at various locations in the Atlanta area. It is a four-sport competition where fans, alumni, and anyone up for some healthy competition battle against Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference rivals in tennis, volleyball, flag football and a 5K road race over four days. The competition is open to everyone. Over the last three years, the event has grown to over 2,000 participants. Prizes are awarded in each sport and participants earn points for their school and the overall team competition. The schedule includes a tennis tournament tomorrow through Sunday at Piedmont Park's Bitsy Grant Tennis Center and Georgia Tech's Bill Moore Tennis Center; a 5-kilometer road race and fun run Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum; flag football competition Saturday and Sunday at Southern Polytechnic State; and a sand volleyball tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Boys and Girls Club in Brookhaven.
