Flat Rock A.M.E. will celebrate

149 years with all-day celebration

Flat Rock A.M.E. Church will celebrate its 149th Anniversary and Homecoming Celebration Sunday, Aug. 24, with an all-day event for the entire community.

Activities will begin with church school at 10 a.m., followed by a special youth worship service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tiate' Carson, youth minister for First A.M.E. Church in Jamaica, delivering the message.

A "Welcome Home" dinner will be served from 1-2:30 p.m. with the special anniversary and homecoming service scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Special guest will be the Rev. Keith Lawrence of St. John A.M.E. Church in Fairburn. Several local church choirs will provide the music.

In 1854, Flat Rock served as the only church in Fayette County with an African American congregation. Since that time, Flat Rock has been the incubator church for six other churches in the county: Holly Grove A.M.E., Flipper Chapel A.M.E., Little Vine Baptist, Bethlehem Baptist, Edgefield Baptist and Rising Star Baptist.

Flat Rock currently has a small congregation of approximately 50 persons, but the historical church has served the community well through the years, according to many. With the installation of their new pastor, the Rev. Ed. Johnson Jr., members say they intend to support and be involved with many community concerns.

Flat Rock is just off Ga.Hwy. 54 east of Adams Farm. For more information, call John Stokes or Ed Johnson at 770-461-0283.
