Stadium work at ECHS almost done

East Coweta High School football players weren't the only one working up a sweat beside Shoemake Stadium last week. As players prepared for their upcoming season on the upper field, just below them a crew from SportsTurf contractors worked steadily on a brand new home field for the East Coweta Indians.

"It looks great ... very professional," said Coweta County School Board member Steve Bedrosian, who met principal Kirk Stallings and others to look over the field work Tuesday. "I think the school system and East Coweta will be very happy with this field for years to come."

The new field will be ready in plenty of time for the Indians' Sept. 12 home opener. The work upgrades the Indians' home playing field to match Newnan and Northgate's fields by laying a new drainage system, crowning the field and laying new turf.

The stadium's old field had worn badly over the years, and did not have sufficient drainage. The new field covers new grading with a herringbone-patterned drainage system, six inches of sand, four inches of "root zone" material (clay, sand and soil mixture), and new sod.

It is also a part of a number of school system projects that are finishing up for the new year or about to start through the end of 2003. Other projects finishing or coming include:

Several projects at Northgate High School, including work on the stadium homeside concession stands (nearing completion), new tennis courts (approximately half completed), and construction of a new gymnasium (which is just starting).

Grantville Elementary School, beginning soon on U.S. Highway 29 in Grantville (currently completing permits). The school, which will have a capacity of approximately 500 students, is expandable over time. The school will also be built on a more traditional design, looking more like a "traditional red brick school house" and including a "cafetorium" style stage and cafeteria combination, said Coweta County School System Plant Operations Director Coy Mills.

Construction of a new gymnasium at East Coweta Middle School (currently completing permits and bid returns).

An eight-classroom expansion at Arnall Middle School (footings poured and construction underway).

Construction of four new classrooms at Jefferson Parkway Elementary and six new classrooms at Canongate Elementary School (currently awaiting bid returns).

A multipurpose building at Western Elementary School (construction underway).

Construction of the Performing Arts Center on Lower Fayetteville Road. Work is proceeding on schedule at the site, and is still expected to be completed by February 2004.
