Palmetto celebrates 150 years

Palmetto will be celebrating their 150th anniversary next month with four days of fun and food.

It all starts September 25 at 5 p.m. with a cakewalk, silent auction, an old fashioned hoe-down and dinner at the town's senior center. The festivities last until 8 p.m.

Things heat up again on Friday at 5 p.m. with a barbecue, line dancing, a kitchen band and square dancing in City Park. There will also be a free health fair during the day and recognition of the celebration's volunteers.

Saturday kicks off with a car show, various booth attractions and food at the Children's Home from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A parade down Church Street at 2:30 p.m. leads back to the park where an art show, quilt show, Taste of the South, old fashioned games and music express fill the afternoon from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.. At 6 p.m., a womanless wedding will be held at the Palmetto Elementary Gym.

A tree dedication and a tour of homes from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. usher in the last day of events on Sunday.

Dedications of city hall, the police station and other buildings goes from 2-4 p.m.. A trolley tour of Palmetto will start at the administration building. Times for this event have not yet been set. Historical displays and museums will be set up and may be viewed at City Hall, RBC Bank and the Police Station throughout the day.

A closing ceremony at Georgia Baptist Children's Home will consist of a band concert and candlelight service around dusk. Plenty will be happening, so mark your calendar and plan to attend.
