Volleyball matches kick off high school sports season; Starr's Mill jamboree Sat. Although local high school students do not return to class until Monday, some local high school athletes will be back in action in front of the hometown fans before that. Volleyball is the first sport of the fall to start its official schedule, as Starr's Mill hosts its annual jamboree Saturday. Fayette County and McIntosh are scheduled to attend. More local volleyball matches are set for Tuesday, as Fayette County and Northgate travel to the northern end of Fayette for a three-way match hosted by Our Lady of Mercy. Softball season is also right around the corner, as the Fayette County Lady Tigers begin the defense of their state championship by taking the field Friday, Aug. 15, for a tournament at Jordan of Columbus. High school football in Fayette kicks off the next day, when Fayette Christian School unveils its eight-man squad for the 2003 season in its opening game. Beginning with next Wednesday's edition of The Citizen, high school sports schedules for all fall sports will run in chronological order on this page. Any local team which has not submitted a schedule is encouraged to do so via e-mail, at mroark@thecitizennews.com, or by fax at 770-719-1976.
