NCTC takes audiences back to Cold War era with 'A Walk in the Woods' By MICHAEL
BOYLAN The era of the Cold War feels a million miles away these days, especially with terrorism and on-going conflicts in the Middle East. Lee Blessing's play, "A Walk in the Woods," which deals with US-Soviet disarmament talks in the 1980s, is still an extremely relevant piece though and Newnan Community Theatre will present this two man play Friday and Saturdays, Aug. 1, 2, 8 and 9 in their Black Box Theatre. "A Walk in the Woods" is based on the real life events that occurred during disarmament talks in Geneva in the 1980s. Honeyman, a newcomer to the negotiations from the United States, deals with Botvinnik, a wizened Russian negotiator who has dealt with a number of different American negotiators over the years. Botvinnik suggests the two take walks together in the woods when not meeting at the table to get to know each other better and to deal with each other as human beings. The two begin to connect and reach compromises but are still maneuvered by their governments. "A Walk in the Woods" received nominations for the Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. It enjoyed tremendous success on Broadway as well as in London and Moscow. Today, "A Walk in the Woods" continues to engage audiences in various productions around the world with its thought-provoking storyline and dialogue. "A Walk in the Woods" will be presented at 8 p.m. over the next two weekends at Newnan Community Theatre's Black Box Theatre. Tickets for the show are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors and can be purchased by phoning the theatre at 770-683-NCTC.
