Gearing up on the gridiron

In less than one month, high school football for 2003 will be underway in Fayette County.

Local teams have already begun summer practice with an eye toward November and the state playoffs. Fayette will be represented in three separate classifications in the Georgia High School Association.

The largest contingent of local interest will be in Region 5-AAAAA, which includes Fayette County, McIntosh and Starr's Mill. Also in the region are Carver-Columbus, East Coweta, Lovejoy, Newnan and Riverdale. Mundy's Mill is listed as a member, but will play a non-region schedule.

Fayette County opens at home Friday, Aug. 29, against AAAA school Douglas County. McIntosh travels to Eagle's Landing in Henry County that same night.

Starr's Mill kicks off its season in the Georgia Dome the following day against Gwinnett County powerhouse Brookwood, last season's AAAAA state runnerup. The Panthers found some measure of playoff success last season, defeating Tift County in the first round before losing to Northside of Warner Robins.

Sandy Creek will compete in Region 4-AAAA along with Alexander, Chapel Hill, Douglas County, Forest Park, Lithia Springs, North Clayton, Northgate, Pebblebrook and Woodward Academy. The Patriots open the 2003 season Friday, Sept. 5, with a road game against Fayette County.

Region 5-A contains two teams of local interest Our Lady of Mercy, located in north Fayette, and Landmark Christian in Fairburn, whose enrollment is mostly Fayette County residents. Other teams in the region are Bowdon, Heard County, Mt. Zion of Carroll County and Whitefield Academy. Landmark's season opener is Aug. 29 at home against Cross Keys. Our Lady of Mercy opens that same night, also at home against Pacelli Catholic.
