"Grease" began as a popular off-Broadway musical. It grew into a popular Broadway show and an even more popular film. Released by Paramount Pictures in 1978, "Grease" grossed over $340 million worldwide and over 20 million double-soundtrack albums have been sold.

The Villages Amphitheater will screen "Grease" for free this Saturday night and Fayette County residents are invited to come out, sing and dance along to the film and have a rockin' good time.

"Grease" tells the story of the senior class at Rydell High School in the late 1950s. Over the summer, Danny Zuko, played by John Travolta, met Sandy, played by Olivia Newton John, at the beach. They had a summer romance and thought they would never see each other again when the summer was over. Little did they know that they would attend the same school in the fall.

Danny is worried about his rep as a tough guy and Sandy is worried about why Danny is so stand-offish. In addition to their on again-off again romance, there are dozens of other engaging tales of Danny and Sandy's friends in their senior year.

The cast of "Grease" also includes Stockard Channing as Rizzo, Jeff Conaway as Kenickie and Frankie Avalon as Teen Angel. Some of the best known musical numbers in the film are "Summer Lovin'," "Greased Lightning," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and "You're the One That I Want."

Perhaps the most intriguing part of "Grease's" popularity is that it appeals to such a wide-ranging audience. Look around at the show on Saturday and you are sure to see grandparents, parents and children of all ages singing and dancing with the film.

The gates will open at 8 p.m. and the movie will start at 9 p.m.
