Spivey Hall has always been known for bringing in some of the greatest musicians in the world. They have had world-renowned pianists, organists, vocalists, jazz trios, guitarists and more on the stage during each concert season.

This weekend, Spivey Hall takes it to another level when jazz composer and trombonist Craig Harris brings nine other jazz greats together for the premiere of "Souls Behind the Veil," inspired by W.E.B. Dubois's "Souls of Black Folk."

Harris burst on the jazz scene in 1976 with stints with the legendary Sun Ra and Abdullah Ibrahim. He has worked with countless others in the jazz industry before forming his own groups, Tailgater's Tales and the R&B unit Cold Sweat. The rest of the group performing at Spivey Hall this weekend have had amazing careers as well.

Baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluett is a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet who has played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Dewey Redman, tenor saxophonist and father of Joshua Redman, has had a career spanning five decades and has worked with Ornette Coleman and Pat Matheny. Clarinet player Don Byron has been named top clarinetist in the Downbeat Critics poll for 10 years running, while Oliver Lake, according to the All Music Guide, "is an unpredictable soloist who traverses the entire range of the alto."

Drummer Billy Hart has worked with such greats as Shirley Horn, Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz, while bassist Cecil McBee has worked with the likes of Dinah Washington and Alice Coltrane. Graham Haynes, son of drummer Rot Haynes, is an up-and-coming cornetist. Trumpet player Hugh Ragin is best known for his work with David Murray but has also played with the legendary Maynard Ferguson. Percussionst Kahil El'Zabar rounds out the group and is best known among New York's avant-garde jazz crowd.

Craig Harris' "Souls Behind the Veil" will be presented Sunday, July 20, at 5 p.m. Tickets are $40. Phone 770-961-3683 or visit www.spiveyhall.org for more information.
