Pete Rose to visit old team in Macon

Pete Rose, major league baseball's all time hits leader, will be appearing in Macon at a July 24 game at Luther Williams Field.

Rose, who played for the old Macon Peaches in 1962, will be honored on Pete Rose Day at the Peaches' game against the Pensacola Pelicans, the defending Southeastern League champions. There will be pre-game festivities, at which Rose will address the crowd and throw out the first pitch, prior to the game's start at 7:05 p.m.

As part of the Pete Rose Day, the Peaches also want to hold a reunion for those players who were teammates with Rose in Macon during that season over four decades ago. Players who were members of the 1962 team or persons who know how to contact one of these players are asked to to contact the Peaches by calling Ben Berman at (478) 742-1717 or (917) 602-0618 or by e-mailing Jimmy Booth at maconpeaches@jimmybooth.com.

Single-game tickets for the contest will be $10 for box seats and $7 for general admission. Ticket information can be obtained by calling (478) 742-1717.

Rose led the Florida State League in total bases in 1961 before coming to Macon. During his season with the Peaches, he was the South Atlantic League's All-Star second baseman, leading the league in runs scored and triples. He batted .330 and had a .966 fielding average that year.

He joined the Cincinnati Reds the following season and was National League Rookie of the Year in 1963. This was the start of a remarkable major league career with the Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies, including three World Series championships, a string of All-Star Game appearances, and a long list of major league and National League records.

The Macon Peaches are part of the Independent Southeastern Professional Baseball League, a professional minor league baseball organization with teams in Baton Rouge and Houma, La.; Montgomery, Ala.; and Pensacola, Fla. This is the second season for the league, which is playing a 72-game schedule.

The Peaches are the league's newest entry, and are playing in historic Luther Williams Field in Macon, one of the nation's oldest ballparks and most recently the home of the Atlanta Braves Class A farm team.
