Pioneers compete at regionals

The SouthSide Pioneers competed last weekend at the 2003 USATF Regional III Junior Olympics Championships in Landover, Md. Here are some results from that event.

Silver Medalist: Mauri Peoples was a silver medalist in the Youth Girls Running Long Jump, with a jump of 5.2 meters. She advances as one of the top three medalists who will compete at the National USATF Junior Olympics July 28-Aug. 3 in Miami. Peoples advanced to the National Elite Youth Athlete Honor Roll with this jump. Before this, she was ranked 101st with a 15'1.5" best.

Estella Moore placed fourth in the Young Women's 100-meter dash at 12.2 seconds. Moore is ranked 52nd in the nation in the 100M and 91st in the nation in the 200-meter and maintains her status on the National Elite Youth Athlete Honor Roll.

Kristin Olson placed eighth in the Intermediate Girls 400-meter hurdles at 1:10. Olson is ranked 49th in the nation in this event and maintains her status on the National Elite Youth Athlete Honor Roll.

Tyra West came in 11th in the Youth Girls Discus (17.82 meters).

Matt Harlfinger came in tenth in the Young Men's triple jump with a leap of 12.35 meters.

The Youth Girls 4x100-meter relay team of Vashti Campbell, Michelle Stegall, Canesha Edwards and Mauri Peoples placed 13th.

Canesha Edwards was 17th in the Youth Girls Long Jump at 4.56 meters. Edwards actually had the best jump of the day with a 5.6m, but she fouled. Edwards is ranked 131st in the nation.

Other SouthSide competitors this past weekend include Matt Harlfinger (Young Men's 110-meter hurdles, 15.79); Khaneisha Pagan (Intermdediate Girls 100-meter hurdles, 17.41); Andrew Harlfinger (Intermediate Boys shot put); and Tyra West (Youth Girls shot put).

The Pioneers will compete at the 2003 Georgia Games this weekend at Life University. They will send over 40 youth athletes, two Open Division athletes (ages 19-29) and five Masters athletes (30+).

The team has a National Elite Youth All- American in Tina Williamson, who is ranked first in the nation in the Under-9 age division in the 200-meter dash (30.42) and in the 400-meter run(1:08.53).

In addition, Mellany Stanislaus is ranked 24th in the Intermediate Girls triple jump (35'11"); the Young Women's relay team of Jessi Brown, Tiffany Grant, Kristin Holden, and Estella Moore is ranked 65th in the nation (50.11); Lisa Williams is ranked 71st in the nation in the Bantam Girls 800-meter run (2:44) and 75th in the nation in the 1500-meter run (5:48); and Joshua Houston is ranked 82nd in the Youth Boys discus (114'11").

National Elite Youth All-Americans are those athletes who are ranked 1-20 in the nation in track & field events.
