Red Cross offers sports injury class for coachesThe American Red Cross is offering a special program for coaches that teaches how to prevent sports injuries and respond effectively if an emergency occurs. The Sports Safety Training Program also focuses on determining when it is safe to return injured players to the game. The eight-hour class was developed by the Red Cross and the United States Olympic Committee. Research indicates that about half of all sports injuries could be prevented, according to Kay Camacho, an educational services employee with the Red Cross. Injuries can also be caused by wear and tear and other hazards inherent to sports, officials said. The program is geared toward coaches, but officials, teachers and parents would also benefit from the course, Camacho said. The course will cover fundamental principles of first aid, proper treatment for various sports injuries and safety responsibilities of coaches. Adult and child CPR training is also provided. The course is offered in two four-hour sessions. The next class is scheduled for Sept. 11 and Sept. 18 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Red Cross headquarters at 1911 Monroe Dr. in Atlanta. The fee is $65 per person. Participants must attend both nights to become certified. The Red Cross can also accommodate schools, recreational groups or other organizations who wish to take the program. For more information, contact Camacho at 404-575-3158.
