Huefner's 'got milk'

Robert Huefner had a great senior year and his summer is off to a good start, too.

The recent graduate of McIntosh High School was at the Mall of America last week with friends and family, taking in the roller coaster, the aquarium and some serious shopping. He is also looking forward to a cruise that will end in Cozumel, Mexico, later this month.

It is a reward for a lot of hard work hard work that got him into Harvard University and also helped him rack up a number of awards and scholarships this year, most recently a Got Milk? Student Athlete Milk Moustache of the Year Award.

Huefner was in Orlando recently with the 24 other winners of the SAMMY Award. He sat next to Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson at the banquet, met Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders and got his picture taken with a milk moustache. The SAMMY winners recently had their milk moustache pictures published in USA Today, ESPN the Magazine and Sports Illustrated.

"I'm honored and excited to be chosen as a SAMMY winner," Huefner said. "I'm glad that hard work and dedication really does pay off. Hopefully others will see this and strive to do their best as well."

Huefner qualified for the competition by writing an essay on "why milk is important to him and his life." He was among 75 semifinalists from a region that included North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Huefner was one of the three finalists from that region, chosen by the celebrity athlete judge for that region, Mia Hamm.

Over 50,000 student athletes entered the competition and Huefner was among the 25 winners to be inducted into the Sammy Hall of Fame. He enjoyed an all expense paid trip to Orlando, marched in the SpectroMagic parade with the other winners, received a $7,500 scholarship and a crystal trophy.

Pretty amazing. But more amazing when you consider that Huefner was also named the Wendy's High School Heisman winner during the school year, was a Coca-Cola Scholar, a National Merit Scholar and the school's salutatorian. He received close to $20,000 in scholarship money this year and that is not including the big one, the ROTC Scholarship that will give him full tuition to Harvard for all four years, which totals close to $200,000.

In addition to his incredible academic achievements, Huefner played football, soccer and cross country at McIntosh, was an Eagle Scout and did volunteering throughout the community. He also spent some time this summer helping out at Boys State. Last year, Huefner was a participant in Boys Nation.

When not hanging around and spending time with his friends before buckling down at Harvard in the fall, Huefner is teaching SAT preparation courses. Students are probably hoping some of Huefner's success rubs off on them. First, they should probably start drinking more milk.
