Another month to go on Hwy. 74 repaving

Commuters and Peachtree City residents have a month to go before work is complete on repaving the length of Ga. Highway 74 from I-85 in Fulton County south to Starr's Mill.

Despite 18 days of rain within the contract period for completing the work, the crews are on schedule to finish the project by July 23, said Dorothy Daniel, communications officer with the state Department of Transportation.

"They've had 18 rain days, but on the days it didn't rain, it's been moving real well," said Daniel, confirming that another couple of weeks of detail work like shoring up road shoulders and putting down stripping will extend the final project finish date to early August.

"Weather permitting," she added.

To help alleviate congestion on the already busy Hwy. 74 corridor, the work is being performed at night, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The work has been particularly frustrating for drivers within the past week, as the crews are now on the two-lane stretch of Hwy. 74 below Ga. Highway 54. Closing one lane to all traffic and rerouting it to a single lane has caused bottlenecks in the early evenings, especially around the industrial park.

The repaving is part of the state DOT's regular maintainenance program. Hwy. 74 is still planned to be four-laned south to Starr's Mill sometime in the future.
