Memory Walk plans taking shape

Preparations are under way for the 2003 Southern Crescent Alzheimer's Memory Walk, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, in Peachtree City, rain or shine. The planning committee met recently to fine tune last year's program in hopes that it will be bigger and better than ever.

Floy Farr, whose wife has Alzheimer's, started the Southern Crescent Memory Walk in 2000. Since its inception, the Memory Walk has gradually grown from 450 participants raising over $73,000 to over 1,000 participants in 2002 raising over $148,000. This revenue includes contributions from sponsors, money raised by teams and individual walkers and runners. Donations are used to help fund research for a cure, educational programs, financial assistance, personalized counseling and support groups.

The Memory Walk is a community event that not only includes a 5K (3.1-mile) walk but is also a fun, family affair with a complimentary breakfast and music provided by Peachtree Jazz Edition prior to the walk. Afterwards the Peachtree City Kiwanis will serve a hamburger and hotdog lunch free of charge. There will also be drawings for prizes. It is a wonderful way to raise both money and awareness for this disease which affects four million Americans.

This year's walk will begin at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Registration is from 8-9:30 a.m. with runners starting at 9:15 a.m. and walkers at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring their children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors and even pets to the event.
