SCAT makes waves in two meets

The Southern Crescent Aquatic Team of Peachtree City won the Men's club title at the USA Swimming National 25-Kilometer Championship in Clemson over Father's Day weekend.

In a turn of events appropriate for the holiday, Rob Copeland and his 16-year-old son, Noah, celebrated with a standout finish in the event. Noah, swimming his first marathon, placed third with a time of 4:47.24, and Rob, a veteran marathon swimmer, touched fourth at 5:19.32.

The Copelands, from Fayetteville, are the highest placing parent-child duo ever at a National Championship. Their finish helped to propel SCAT to first place in the Men's club competition.

The conditions in Lake Hartwell were near ideal. The water was calm and about 78-80.5 degrees, the skies were partly cloudily with minimal wind, and air temperature of 85 degrees. The course was a 6K swim from the starting line then twice around a 6.5K triangle, and then 6K back to the start/finish line.

In other SCAT competition, the team swam to third place against 16 other teams in a recent Warner Robins meet. SCAT swimmers with at least one top-ten finish included Missy Beall, Jessica Heimann, Kiersten Mossburg, Kirsten Pretzer, Nicole Roddenbery, Julie Glass, Katelyn Goodheart, Keaton Hannon, Cassandra Heimann, Julia Redmon, Georgia Highsmith, Katelyn Davis, MacKenzie Garrot, Heather Highsmith, SamChun Shimabe, Casey Blanchard, Zach Payne, David Menchinger, Matthew Hildebrand, Matthew Manley, Joseph Redmon, Billy Jamerson, Thomas Lucak, Chris Lee, and Bryan Mitchell. Other swimmers who competed for SCAT include Grace Roberston, Bailey Garrot, and Jeb Beard.

The Southern Crescent Aquatic Team is a year-round competitive swim program based in Peachtree City but serving swimmers in Fayette and surrounding counties. The team competes on a regional, state, and national level. SCAT is coached by Jamey Myers. More information about the team can be found at scatswimming.org.
