Fayette drivers rolling in Thursday Thunder

The sixth season of Thursday Thunder is now well under way, with two weeks of racing complete. Already, the top contenders for the series championships have begun to make themselves known. Below is a brief look at how the Fayette County drivers are doing so far this year.

Jonathan Chandler, 13, of Fayetteville finished 12th in the Moore Machinery Movers Young Guns division in week two of this season's Thursday Thunder, dropping him to sixth in points standings. Jonathan finished second in the first week of competition, his first week since moving up to the advanced Bandolero division.

Matt Cox, 13, of Fayetteville has not yet competed in this season's Thursday Thunder but is expected to join the competition in the Legends Chargers division this week. In 2002, he finished second overall in the Bandolero Bandits division, earning one win and eight top-5 finishes. Cox is the son of Gene Cox, president of USAR, the sanctioning body for the Hooters Pro Cup racing series.

Michael Herrington, 34, of Tyrone finished eighth in the Legends Semi-Pro division in week two of this season's Thursday Thunder and is currently ninth in points. Michael finished tenth in week one. He owns Piedmont Painting.

Douglas Ludwig, 18, of Fayetteville finished fifth in the Legends Pro division in week two of this season's Thursday Thunder, dropping him to third in the points standings. Douglas finished third the first week.

Robert Mowery of Fayetteville finished 11th in the Moore Machinery Movers Bandolero Young Guns division in the second week of this season's Thursday Thunder and is currently ninth in points. Robert finished tenth in week one. This is his first season competing in the Thursday Thunder series.

Bre Sharp, 12, of Fayetteville finished fourth in the Moore Machinery Movers Bandolero Young Guns division in week two of this season's Thursday Thunder, bringing her to fourth in the points standings. Bre finished sixth during. She finished fourth in points in the Bandits division in 2002 and should compete for the Young Guns championship this season.

Mike Sims, 27, of Fayetteville has not yet competed in this season's Thursday Thunder but is expected to join the competition in the Legends Chargers division this week. He has been racing in Thursday Thunder for four years and finished second in the Chargers division last season.

Racing resumes this Thursday at 6 p.m. at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thunder Ring, the quarter-mile track situated along the frontstretch, with plenty of action sponsored by Eagle 106.7 FM and Gresham and Associates. This week, Eagle 106.7 morning show co-host Rhubarb Jones will be here to help raise money for the fight against leukemia and lymphoma. Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark has promised the first five fans who bring Rhubarb a $1,000 check will receive a complete ticket package for two for the Oct. 24-26 Georgia 500 weekend.

Thursday Thunder tickets can be purchased the evening of the race at Gate 13 (located on the front of the property running parallel to Hwy 19/41).
