Fayette drivers start strong in AMS series

The sixth season of Thursday Thunder began June 5, and here is a brief look at how the Fayette County drivers are doing.

Jonathan Chandler, 13, of Fayetteville finished second in the first week of competition in the Moore Machinery Movers Young Guns division, his first week since moving up to the advanced Bandolero division. Chandler finished sixth in the Bandolero Bandits division in 2002.

Matt Cox, 13, of Fayetteville did not compete in the first week of this season's Thursday Thunder but is expected to join the competition in the Legends Chargers division this week. In 2002, he finished second overall in the Bandolero Bandits division, earning one win and eight top-5 finishes. Cox is the son of Gene Cox, president of USAR, the sanctioning body for the Hooters Pro Cup racing series.

Michael Herrington, 34, of Tyrone finished 10th in the Legends Semi-Pro division last week. He owns Piedmont Painting and his favorite driver is Bill Elliott. Herrington finished fourth overall in the Legends Chargers division last season, winning one race.

Douglas Ludwig, 18, of Fayetteville finished third in the Legends Pro division last week.

Robert Mowery of Fayetteville finished 10th in the Moore Machinery Movers Bandolero Young Guns division last week. This is his first season competing in the Thursday Thunder series.

Bre Sharp, 12, of Fayetteville finished sixth in the Moore Machinery Movers Bandolero Young Guns division last week. Sharp finished fourth in points in the Bandits division in 2002 and should compete for the Young Guns championship this season. She also enjoys dancing and wakeboarding, and her favorite driver is Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Mike Sims, 27, of Fayetteville did not compete in the first week of this season's Thursday Thunder but is expected to return to the Legends Chargers division this week. He has been racing in Thursday Thunder for four years and finished second in the Chargers division last season.

Racing takes place each Thursday at 6 p.m. at Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thunder Ring, the quarter-mile track situated along the frontstretch. Tickets can be purchased the evening of the race at Gate 13 (located on the front of the property running parallel to Hwy 19/41).
