GYB performance to benefit award-winning school paper

This month, dancers from all over the country are attending Georgia Youth Ballet's Summer Intensive Workshop at The Studio in Fayetteville. The workshop will end on June 27 with a benefit performance for "The Prowler," the student newspaper at Starr's Mill High School. "The Prowler" was named the most outstanding student newspaper in the state in 2001, received Superior ranking from Columbia University, as well as General Excellence from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association.

In addition to GYB's co-artistic directors Magdalena Maury and Jonsie Pollock, the students are learning from three guest teachers who are internationally renowned dancers and choreographers. Magda Aunon is the long-time artistic director of Fort Lauderdale Ballet Classique. She was raised and trained in Cuba and toured internationally with Alicia Alonso Ballet Company. Today, Aunon is in great demand as a teacher of master classes and as a teacher and judge for the International Ballet Competition.

Viktor Yeliohin trained at the Choreographic School in Tashkent, Russia and danced with Donetsk Theatre. He was choreographer for Men's Olympics from 1982-86 and he choreographs and stages ballets and gives master classes throughout the United States. Magaly Suarez trained at the National School of Ballet in Cuba with Fernando Alonso and Ramona De Saa. Suarez has coached many winners and finalists for the International Ballet Competition and the Varna Ballet Competition and she is a frequent guest teacher in Italy, Spain, Brazil, Venezuela and Columbia.

The concluding performance is entitled "Summerfest 2003" and will take place Friday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Starr's Mill High School in Peachtree City. All tickets are $5 and may be purchased at The Studio, 220 Robinson Drive, Fayetteville or by calling 770-716-9858.
