Keene grabs spot in Gov. Honors program

The Peachtree City School of Dance has announced Sara Keene's acceptance into the Governor's Honors Program, a six-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year.

The students selected will spend the summer at Valdosta State University June 17-July 26. Students wishing to audition for the dance program went through two rounds of auditions at the county and at the state level. At the auditions the dancers participated in an interview, a dance knowledge test, a one-minute solo and a dance class consisting of ballet technique, jazz and modern. Of an estimated 200 dancers only 16 were chosen.

Keene is a junior at Fayette County High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Quill and Scroll Honor Society, a Junior Marshall, a Who's Who Among American High School Students, and is the Editor-in-Chief of the "Golden Memories" yearbook.

Prior to receiving acceptance to the Governor's Honors Program, Keene was also accepted by the Pennsylvania Youth Ballet in Carlisle, Penn. Keene is a senior company member at the Peachtree City School of Dance under the direction of Kathleen Senger. She has been studying under Senger for four years.

Keene's parents are Cookie Keene of Fayetteville and Richard and Rena Keene of Homerville.

The School of Dance will perform its annual spring recital Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Willie Duke Auditorium at Starr's Mill. Tickets are $5 and are available by calling 770-632-1544 or purchasing them at the door. The company members will be performing the ballet "The Graduation Ball" along with various other pieces choreographed by Senger.
