Summer reading program underway

Summer is a great time for a lot of things including cookouts, vacations and watching summer movies. One of the best things about summer though is summer reading and the libraries in the state of Georgia recently launched their Books Ahoy summer reading program. There is a program for children ages 13 and under, a Young Adult program for ages 13 and up and some libraries even have reading programs for adults. Though the rules for each reading program may differ slightly at each library, readers are rewarded for the number of books they read, the number of hours they read during the summer and the number of times they visit the library.

In addition to the fun of reading, children will also be able to participate in a number of entertaining programs. The Fayette County and the Tyrone library will offer Character First programs on Monday. Fayette County will have their Character First programs at 11 a.m., while Tyrone will have theirs at 1 p.m. Topics included in the program this summer will include Truthfulness, Attentiveness, Obedience, Enthusiasm, and Generosity among others.

Peachtree City's library will have Movie Mondays. Movies featured this summer will be "The Little Mermaid," "Free Willy," "Lilo and Stitch" and several others.

On Tuesdays at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m., the Peachtree City Library will welcome entertainers such as magicians, musicians, storytellers, puppets, jugglers and a theater group. Many of those same artists will perform on Tuesdays at 1 and 2:30 p.m. at the Fayette County library and 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays at the Tyrone library. Guests are asked to pick up their tickets at the library starting a week before the event as seating is limited.

The Peachtree City library will offer a craft period on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and there will also be young adult programs for ages 13 and up on Thursdays at 2 p.m. There will be craft programs on June 12 and July 17 and Anime programs on June 26 and July 24.

For more detailed information and a full schedule of summer events, as well as to register for the summer reading program, visit your local library.
