Thursday Thunder kicks off tomorrow

Racing fans typically have to wait until the weekend to see fast-paced racing action, and then it is usually in the comfort of their homes, far away from the roar of the track. However, there is a remedy for this.

Racing afficionados can head to Atlanta Motor Speedway every Thursday night, starting tomorrow and continuing through Aug. 7, for the Thursday Thunder summer racing series.

This is the sixth summer for Thursday Thunder and each week hundreds of racers in several divisions drive around Thunder Ring, a quarter-mile track that has seen some intense competition over the years. Each week, visitors will get to see racing in the Legends Car, Bandolero, and Thunder Roadster divisions as well a special attraction and a Celebrity Grudge Match.

Some of this year's highlights will include Mascot Mania Night, lawnmower racing, fireworks, a "Faster Pastor" race and a grudge match featuring former NASCAR star Ernie Irvan.

Perhaps the biggest attraction to Thursday Thunder is the price. Tickets are $5 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12 and free for kids under the age of six. In addition to the low ticket prices, hot dogs and sodas are also just $1 a piece. Parking is free. Spectator gates open at 6 p.m. with preliminary action beginning immediately. Feature racing begins at 7 p.m. and concludes by 10:30 p.m.

Thursday Thunder kicks off tomorrow with a race between WSB-TV sports anchors Bill Hartman and Chuck Dowdle and a performance by the Lightforce Choir.
