Duncan Park negotiations finally successful?

Fairburn's Duncan Park could soon reopen.

That's the word from Fairburn city administrator Jim Williams who said the city continues to work with Fulton County staff to try and find a solution to reopen the park that serves hundreds of residents in South Fulton County.

Williams said the city is currently in the final stages of working out a lease deal with Fulton County to operate the park.

"We would lease it from the county for five years at $1 a year," he said.

The administrator said the city is looking at putting $60,000 into the budget this year to help fund the park.

The park closed late last year after Fulton County and Fairburn officials could not agree over who should pay for the park's operations.

Fulton officials have cited a state law that states when a municipality reaches 5,000 in population and annexes parks into its municipalities, it must start picking up the costs.

Fairburn's population topped the 5,000 mark in the last Census and the political war began over who should pay for the park.

But with kids out of school, Fairburn officials are anxious to see the park open again.

"We'd like to get this done as soon as possible," Williams said.

Williams also said the city would like to see the the engineering reports on the swimming pool in the park.

"It's been unusable for about two years, but we'd love to get it up and running again," he said.
