Georgia Youth Ballet performs in Virginia

Members of the Georgia Youth Ballet just returned from the annual Southeastern Regional Ballet Association (SERBA) Festival in Roanoke, Va. During the three-day event, GYB's 26 Junior and Senior Company dancers took classes from internationally renowned teachers and performed with nearly 900 dancers from 22 other companies from all seven southeastern states.

The highlight of the weekend for GYB was their won debut of "La Desead," a tango choreographed by Atlanta based dancer and choreographer Kristy Nillson. The piece was chosen for performance at SERBA after a demanding regional audition process, with rehearsals beginning last September.

In addition, Nillson and select members of GYB's Senior Company competed for scholarships and awards. Shaun Strickland of McDonough won a scholarship to Craft of Choreographers this summer in Pennsylvania and a full scholarship to Burklyn Ballet in Vermont for the summer. Katherine Whitlock of Fayetteville was first runner-up for a scholarship to The Rock School of Classical Ballet's Summer Program in Philadelphia. Nillson was first runner-up for the Craft of Choreography Project. Josh Lewis was given a scholarship to Gainesville Ballet in the fall. Georgia Youth Ballet was asked to perform at Ruth Mitchell's fall concert in Atlanta later this year.
