Nursing student makes golf fundraiser a family affair

Noel Lawson doesn't play golf, but she knows how to get others excited about it.

As tournament chair for the upcoming Georgia Association of Nursing Students' Golf Tournament at Orchard Hills Golf Club in Newnan, Noel is responsible for gathering sponsors and building the community's enthusiasm about a new fundraising event.

"Stepping Out of the White and On To the Green: Putting for the Future of Nursing" will be held Friday, May 30. The proceeds from the tournament will help fund scholarships and leadership programs for the association's members and help further their mission to provide programs dedicated to the development of the nursing profession.

Peggie Lawson, Noel's mother-in-law and director of acute care services at Newnan Hospital, is assisting in securing sponsors and organizing teams for the event. A nurse at Newnan for 21 years, she knows how important it is to encourage others into the nursing profession.

"I have a passion for nursing," said Peggie. "This is a great way to educate others and encourage more people to look into this rewarding career. I'm so proud of Noel for organizing this event."

"Peggie has had a huge influence in my decision to go into nursing," said Noel, a junior at the Medical College of Georgia in Athens. "I was a veterinary technician and needed a change but wanted to stay in medicine. Peggie shared with me all that was possible if I became a nurse."

Noel is part of a new trend in the nursing profession. Many people are turning to nursing as their second career and returning to school for their certification. She also serves as Treasurer of the GANS Board of Directors.

"As people get older they change their minds about their career paths and decide they want to make a difference," said Darlene Evans, Vice President of Patient Care Services at Newnan Hospital. "Nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession and offers great job security. Nurses are in high demand everywhere and they are so valuable to the hospital and the patients."

Newnan Hospital is the premier Hole-in-One sponsor for the tournament. A $1,000 prize will be given to the player who makes a hole-in-one. Approximately 80-100 players in teams of four are expected to participate in the tournament with prizes going to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. and lunch will be provided to players. An awards ceremony will be held on the Orchard Hills' pavilion at the end of the day. The fees are $100 per player to enter. GANS will be selling $5 mulligans during play to better your score. Nursing students will be volunteering during the event. The tournament will be featured in the National Student Nurses' Association Imprint magazine.
