Triche named Coach of the Year By MONROE
ROARK
Sandy Creek High boys basketball coach Maurice Triche has been recognized by his peers for his exceptional inaugural season at the helm for the Patriots. The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association has named Triche the 2002-03 Coach of the Year for Region 4-AAAA. He received the honor as a result of the votes of the region's 10 coaches, he said last week. "This is special for me because it came from my peers," he said. It should also be considered special because it is Triche's first year as a head coach anywhere, after stints as an assistant at Sandy Creek, Riverdale and Morrow. He inherited a team that had reached the state quarterfinals in 2001-02 but graduated nine seniors. In what could have reasonably been expected to be a rebuilding year, Triche guided the Patriots to a 19-11 record and the Region 4-AAAA title. In addition to his coaching honor, the Patriots' Kevin Craig was recognized as a first-team All-Region player. Now, Triche can look forward to next season with 13 players coming back. "We should be pretty decent," he said.
