Ebenezer United Methodist to celebrate 120 years

Fayette County's Ebenezer United Methodist Church will celebrate 120 years of service to the community with a day-long Homecoming event planned for Sunday, June 8.

Members say the day will be filled with "old-fashioned preaching, eating and fun."

Former pastor Fred Heard, who served Ebenezer from 1983-1987, will be the guest preacher.

A covered-dish dinner on the grounds will follow the morning service and everyone is encouraged to wear clothing in the styles of the 1800s.

Before the first church b uilding was constructed, the congregation worshiped under a brush arbor and members were baptized in Whitewater Creek. The first pastor was the Rev. Worley. Services were on the second Sunday of each month and pastors were "shared" among churches.

According to The History of Fayette County, Ebenezer came into the Methodist conference in 1883 and has alternately shared pastors with several Methodist churches in the area, namely Fayetteville, Inman, Turin, Palmetto, Hopewell, Noah's Ark, Bethany, Friendship and New Hope.

Ebenezer is at 680 Ebenezer Church Rd., between Fayetteville and Peachtree City. For more information, call the church office, 770-631-0306.
