Macon Peaches play this weekend

As part of an effort to end childhood hunger in Macon and Middle Georgia, the Macon Peaches have announced that fans who attend the team's exhibition games against the Georgia Cherokees, this Friday through Sunday will be admitted free of charge if they bring a non-perishable canned food item.

Fans who don't bring a canned item will be charged $1 for admission, with all cash proceeds donated to a local charity.

The Peaches will play the Georgia Cherokees, part of the Men's Adult Baseball League and Men's Senior Baseball League of Atlanta, tonight at 7:05 p.m.; a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 4 p.m.; and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. All games will be played at Luther Williams Field in Macon.

The Peaches are part of the independent Southeastern Professional Baseball League, a professional minor league baseball organization with teams in Baton Rouge, LA; Houma, LA; Montgomery, AL; Pensacola, FL; and Selma, AL. This year is the second season for the league, which will play a 72-game schedule. The Peaches are the league's newest entry, and are playing in historic Luther Williams Field in Macon, one of the nation's oldest ballparks and most recently the home of the Atlanta Braves Class A farm team.

The Georgia Cherokees have a rich tradition of playing semi-professional baseball in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Most recently, the Cherokees won the 2000 and 2002 Fall League Championships, finished as runner-up in the 2001 Fall Classic in Tampa and 2002 Georgia Games (silver medal), and have participated in the Disney Classic in Orlando (January 2001), Las Vegas Shoot-Out (March 2002, March 2003), and the Billy Townsend Memorial Day Tournament in Atlanta (May 2002) and again in the 2002 Fall Classic.

This is the second time the Georgia Cherokees have played a professional minor league in an exhibition game. In 2001, they played the Albany Alligators of the now-defunct All American Association.
