Area soaked by rain; lighting hits near PTC home at Smokerise

The area continued to get hit with rain Wednesday night and into Thursday afternoon, and a lighting strike damaged a Peachtree City residence during a thunderstorm early Thursday afternoon.

Fayette County got 1.43 inches of rain from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

David Cree, who lives in the Smokerise subdivision, said lightning struck a spot less than 25 feet from his house, creating a hole in the ground. No one was hurt, but the strike knocked out two televisions and blew the front panel off the control system to Cree's sprinkler system.

"We saw a cloud of smoke," coming from the hole created by the lighting strike, Cree said.

More rain is possible today with a 20 percent chance of showers, according to the National Weather Service. Thunderstorms might also be on tap, according to forecasters.

No rain is forecasted for the weekend, although partly cloudy weather is expected with temperatures in the 70s.
