Water restrictions set for June By JOHN
THOMPSON
Despite May being one of the wettest months in history, Coweta's gardeners and lawn aficionados could soon face water restrictions. Last week, the county received a letter from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources announcing a new batch of water restrictions. This year, the restrictions are voluntary, but DNR officials indicate the restrictions will eventually become mandatory. The water schedule, suggested by DNR officials, calls for residents with even-numbered addresses to water Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Residents with odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. No one would be allowed to water on Friday. There are no hourly restrictions or limits on either set of guidelines. In March, the state adopted a statewide drought management plan, which includes the restrictions. "Managing water demand is particularly important in regions experiencing rapid population growth, and few states are growing faster than Georgia has grown over the past 15 years. This water conservation initiative will help preserve a precious natural resource, help to protect an increasingly fragile aquatic environment, and increase water supply opportunities for future generations," wrote DNR officials. Coweta County Information Officer Tom Corker said the county has not taken an official stance on the restrictions.
