Number of activities keep Fayetteville busy this weekend By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Do you have plans for this weekend? If not, you will by the end of this article. There are many events taking place in Fayetteville this weekend, offering up something for everybody. If you are a fan of fine art, food, roses, races, or jazz, this weekend is for you. The Old Courthouse Art Show in Fayetteville will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18. This is the 35th year for the now famous fine arts event that features 75 exhibitors displaying items such as oil paintings, water colors, pottery, photography and handmade jewelry among others. All entrants are competing for one of the first three places or six honorable mentions. The juried part of the show is judged by Doug Alsup from Conyers. The judging begins Saturday morning and awards will be handed out at 1 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to the fine art on display, there will also be a number of food vendors and performances by the Peachtree Wind Ensemble and a barbershop quartet. The hours for the Old Courthouse Art Show are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. Held in conjunction with the 31st Annual Old Courthouse Art Show, the Old Courthouse 5K Road Race is sponsored by the Fayette County Civitan Club. The net proceeds will go to the Joseph Sams School, the High Hope Group Home, and the Fayette County Special Olympics. Registration will begin on race day at 7 a.m. with race start at 8 a.m. Day of race registration cost will be $20. The starting line is behind the old Fayette County Courthouse in the parking lot of the Fayetteville First Baptist Church. Souvenirs/prizes include: Original artwork, 100% heavy cotton T-shirt (one per runner) Door prizes randomly given at the conclusion of the race Etched glass Old Courthouse medallions for the first and second place male and female runners in each age group Large, etched glass Old Courthouse figurine to the overall first place male and female runners. The South Metro Rose Society will present their 18th annual rose show, which will feature a competition, a class on rose arrangements, displays of a variety of rose specimens and more. The event will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18 at Hood Elementary School. Among the many exhibits at the show will be specimens of hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, old garden roses, miniature roses and more. There will also be a rose information display staffed by consulting rosarians, rose experts recognized by the American Rose Society. They will give advice to rose growers of all different levels for free. Admission to the show is free. The show will run from 1-4 p.m. Phone 770-460-0270 for more information. The Lafayette Jazz Festival will take place Saturday, May 17 at the Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville. It will feature bands from Fayetteville, Gwinnett, Jonesboro, and other area schools. Special guests will be the Jazz Guardians from Ft. McPherson, and the Clayton State Jazz Combo. Admission is $5 for all day (12:30-8 p.m.), and all proceeds will go toward new uniforms for the Fayette County High School Marching Band. There will be two ticket tents where visitors will purchase tokens which will be used to purchase samples from the restaurants in attendance. Sample prices will vary from 50 cents to $3. A number of the newer restaurants in Fayetteville will be in attendance including Desert Moon, Johnny Carino's and McAllister's Deli. In addition to all of the food, there will be a larger Kids Corner this year featuring giant inflatables and face painting. The Kids Corner will also be open during the art show on Saturday. There will also be entertainment from acoustic guitarist Jim lamb and local band Justus. As you can see, downtown Fayetteville will be bustling with activity on both Saturday and Sunday.
