Community sports briefs

The Soccer Centre in Fayetteville is accepting registrations for the summer indoor youth soccer leagues for Muppets (Under 6), Under 7, Under 8 and Under 10, both boys and girls. Applications will be taken for teams and individual players. These leagues are for recreational players only and will kickoff the week of June 2 and end the week of July 26. There will be no games the week of July 4.

The season will consist of 7 games with no playoff; games will be played weekday evenings, Saturdays, or Sunday afternoons. In the summer league, Under 10's will play in the large arena.

Starr's Mill High School will be hosting its fifth annual football camp June 2-5 at the school's football complex. All students in grades 3-8 are eligible to attend. The camp will focus on the basic fundamentals of the game. Eighth-graders will participate in a special wing-T instructional camp featuring the offensive coaching staff at Starr's Mill.

The camp will be under the direction of Starr's Mill Head Coach Mike Earwood and the entire Starr's Mill staff, which collectively has a century of coaching experience. The Wendell Coffee Golf Center in Tyrone is hosting a 2003 Summer Break Junior Golf Camp, designed to teach children the basics of golf and how fun the sport can be. Sessions will be held every week from May 27 through Aug. 14, and all camps run Monday through Thursday with the exception of May 27-30, which is Tuesday through Friday.

Each junior will receive different instruction according to his or her level of play. Skills to be covered include the set-up, the swing, the pitch and chip shots, the sand shots, the putting stoke, and how to hit the woods. The head instuctor is PGA apprentice Sean Coffee.

Lunch, drinks and prizes are included. Parents may drop their kids off as early as 8 a.m. if needed, and each day's session ends at 2:30 p.m.

The Our Lady of Mercy Athletic Department has announced its Summer Sports Camps schedules. Lee McDermott, head baseball coach, will have the Mercy Baseball Camp June 9-12. Alan Gordon, head football coach, will have the Mercy Football Camp June 23-27. Clay Cushman, head girls basketball coach, will have the Mercy Girls Basketball Camp June 24-27. Held in conjunction with the 31st Annual Old Courthouse Art Show, the Old Courthouse 5K Roadrace will be run Saturday, May 17, sponsored by the Fayette County Civitan Club. The net proceeds will go to the Joseph Sams School, the High Hope Group Home, and the Fayette County Special Olympics.

Race day registration begins at 7 a.m., with race start at 8 a.m. Race day registration cost is $20.

The starting line is behind the old Fayette County Courthouse in the parking lot of the Fayetteville First Baptist Church.

Souvenirs/prizes include: Original artwork, 100 percent heavy cotton T-shirt (one per runner); door prizes randomly given at the conclusion of the race; etched glass Old Courthouse medallions for the first- and second-place male and female runners in each age group; and large, etched glass Old Courthouse figurine to the overall first-place male and female runners.

Ben Thacker, head boys soccer coach at Fayette County High School will conduct the Tigers Soccer Camp June 2-5 on the upper field of Tiger Stadium at Fayette County High School. Boys and girls from grades 1-8 grades are welcome to attend.

Camp for grades 1-5 will be held from 9 a.m.-noon. Grades 6-8 will meet from 1-4 p.m.

Campers will receive instruction in the fundamentals of the game of soccer leading up to small sided games. Each player will receive encouragement and have fun regardless of their skill level.

The 12th Annual Peachtree City Youth Triathlon, a swim/bike/run race for children ages 7-15, Saturday, May 31, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Glenloch Recreation Area. Participants ages 7-10 wil swim 50 yards, bike 3 miles, and run 1/2 mile. Participants ages 11-15 will swim 100 yards, bike 6 miles, and run 1 mile. Cost is $20, which includes a T-shirt, water bottle, finisher's medal and goody bag. Application Deadline is Saturday, May 24. The Fayette County Summer All Star Basketball Camp, led by coaches Andre Flynn and Brent Jackson, is open to boys and girls who have completed grades 2-8. First session is June 16-20, second session is July 14-18, at the Fayette Co. High Gym. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-noon Friday. Cost is $140 per session. The Peachtree Pacers Summer swim team is conducting registration Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and Thursday, May 29, from 4-7 p.m. at the Kedron Aquatic Center. The season starts June 2. The teams emphasizes lots of swimming fun, is technique-oriented and has adult coaches for all ages and abilities. For more information, go to www.scatswimming.org.

Sandy Creek High boys basketball coach Maurice Triche will direct a basketball camp June 9-13 at the school's gymnasium for boys aged 8-14. Litterial Green, the University of Georgia's all-time leading scorer and a former NBA player, will be the camp's lead instructor. Hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $150. The Optimist Club of Peachtree City will host a junior golf qualifying tournament Wednesday, May 28, at Flat Creek Golf Club in Peachtree City. Tee times begin at 8:25 a.m. Male and female golfers in 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18 age groups, and the top male and female finishers in each group will advance to the district championship June 9 in Augusta.
