Credit Rivers'
family for holding on
The order of the day for current journalism is ... to take a relatively benign story, create a bad guy, and then tell people that he is responsible for making their lives worse. Paul Rivers and his family have done nothing negative to the community. They have maneuvered to keep and work the farm, at considerable expense, for many years. The serenity of the Rivers' land that so many local residents have enjoyed for so long as a brief escape from the bustle of the area is due entirely to the tenacity and spirit that emanates from over 100 years of family ownership; these people are no "Johnny come latelys." The "me last" attitude of transplant Fayette County residents is understandable, but cannot be condoned. The Rivers family remembers when their property was seamlessly joined to the surrounding rolling open land and should at least receive a nod of appreciation from the community for holding out this long. The crippling tax burdens that are associated with extensive property ownership have finally caught up to the Rivers family. They are effectively being forced out, and if given the option would stay put. The absurd slant and blatant fabrications that Mr. Lynch added to this story are diminished only by the true down-to-earth and wholesome nature of Paul Rivers. You should be ashamed of yourself for attempting to tarnish a reputation, and bear false witness. Peter Roberts
