Tennis teams from area high schools have been busy this week with the first round of state playoff competition, with most of them advancing to the round of 16.

In Class A, Landmark's boys beat Rabun Gap and went on to face Trion, while the girls downed Jefferson and advanced to face Galloway. Both second-round matches for Landmark were scheduled for yesterday afternoon. The girls from Our Lady of Mercy lost in the first round to Athens Academy.

Sandy Creek sent both of its squads to the AAAA state tournament, with the boys losing to Lakeside-Evans in the first round and the girls losing to Greenbriar.

In AAAAA action, McIntosh swept both of its first-round matches, the boys over Benedictine and the girls over Wayne County. The Chiefs advanced to play Tift County, while the Lady Chiefs moved on to face Lee County.

Starr's Mill won its boys and girls matches over Camden County, with Eagle's Landing waiting in the second round to face both squads.

East Coweta's girls remained alive, winning over Glynn Academy to set up a second-round date with Tift County. Glynn Academy defeated Fayette County in boys play, while Newnan's girls lost to St. Vincent's.

All second-round matches are to be completed by tomorrow, with the quarterfinals set for Monday and Tuesday. All semifinals and finals in all classifications begin next Friday at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain.
