Publications honor Fayette mothers

By Joyce Beverly
Publisher, Fayette Woman

Fayette Woman magazine and The Citizen Newspapers are pleased to have coordinated a Mother of the Year contest for Fayette County residents this week.

In March, the two publications began promoting the contest, asking readers to nominate their mothers with an essay telling why their mother should be named "Mother of the Year." We expected to recognize three mothers, according to their appropriate age category: 18-34 year olds, 35-54 year olds, and 55 and older. The winners and more than a dozen finalists are featured in this issue of the newspaper. No entries were submitted for the youngest age category and the judges, a panel of volunteers who live outside Fayette County, declared a tie in the 35-54 year old division.

Dorrie Thompson, a Peachtree City mother of three, was nominated by a friend on behalf of her second grade son, Robbie, who is unable to write himself due to a physical handicap. In spite of the challenges she faces in running a home and raising three children, Dorrie still finds time to vounteer and was especially helpful in the building of Peachtree City's All Children's Playground. (Read her nominating essay on Page 3C.)

Jan Shannon's daughter who now lives in Michigan sees how brave her mother was in raising she and her brother as a single mom. "She did what every good parent does: she raised us to be good adults," her daughter wrote. (Read entire essay on page 3C.)

After raising her own children, Sandra Sanders adopted her grandchildren as well and her granddaughter wants you to know what great care she takes of her. "She always makes us feel special," the granddaughter wrote. (Read this story on page 3C).

Excerpts and photos from other mothers nominated for this contest are featured on pages 8 and 9 of this section. You will easily see why choosing "winners" was a difficult decision that we do not envy our judges. All of these courageous women are "winners" and we are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize them in a special way.

We appreciate the partnership of our customers who have joined with us in this contest by providing prizes and gift certificates. They are: A Flower Bouquet, Atlanta Market Finds, Bouligninin Shoes & Accessories, Legacy Luxury Limousine Service, Mucklow's Fine Jewelry, Mud Pies Baby & Kids, One Magnolia Lane, and Whitewater Country Club.

We have learned from our experience in sponsoring this contest this year and look forward to continuing this event for many years to come. Congratulations to all those whose family members took the time to recommend them for this honor, and to all, we wish a blessed and happy Mother's Day.
