Senoia UMC homecoming this Sunday Nestled near the heart of Senoia's historic downtown district at the corner of Bridge and Seavy Streets, Senoia United Methodist Church, founded in 1861, five years before the recognized establishment of the city of Senoia, will celebrate its 56th Annual Homecoming Sunday. This year's homecoming celebration will feature the return of one of its former pastors, the Rev. Sidney S. Tate, as preacher for the 11 a.m. morning worship service. His sermon topic will be entitled: "Homecoming or Homegoing?" based on these Scripture lessons: Genesis 17:1-8; Hebrews 11:8-16 and Luke 15:11-32. Sidney S. Tate was born in Athens, the son of a Methodist minister. He graduated from LaGrange High School in LaGrange and Emory University in Atlanta. He then earned the Master of Divinity degree from the Theological School at Drew University, in Madison, New Jersey. Early in his ministry, Mr. Tate served pastoral appointments in Athens, Georgia and near Powder Springs. In addition, he spent a year as one of two Methodist Campus Ministers at the Wesley Foundation on the campus of the University of Georgia. He has served the Tallapoosa, First United Methodist Church; the Newnan Springs United Methodist Church near Rossville; the Senoia United Methodist Church; the New Hope United Methodist Church, in Gainesville near Lake Lanier; the Villa Rica First United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church in Manchester. In June of 2000, after 42 years in the North Georgia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, Tate assumed the retired relationship and now makes LaGrange his home. He is married to a minister's daughter, the former Enid Smith from Vermont. They are the parents of two married sons, Philip and Paul. Sidney and Enid have three grandchildren and one grandson. Tate enjoys singing, 35 mm photography, sports, walking, golf, and people. Serving as host for this special celebration homecoming service will be The Rev. Steve Davidson, pastor. According to Davidson, in addition to Sidney Tate's preaching, there will be special music presented by the Chancel Choir with Jim Preece at the organ console. A special "musical surprise" may be in the offing for the service. As a significant part of the service there will be a memorial remembrance of those who have died from among the membership during the year. This year prayerful tribute will be made to well-known Senoian and respected community leader Billy K. Adcock. Following the service, traditional dinner on the grounds will be served. New and old friends and acquaintances of Senoia United Methodist Church will gather for this memorable occasion. Everyone is cordially invited to join in the celebration on this significant day.
