Top teacher to be named May 12

The three finalists for Coweta County's 2003 Teacher of the Year are Cynthia Bennett of East Coweta High School, Julie Raschen of White Oak Elementary School, and Nancy Williams of Willis Road Elementary School.

2002 Teachers of the Year served as judges to determine the three finalists, based on extensive essays covering applicants' professional development, community involvement, philosophy of teaching, personal teaching styles and other topics.

Next week, a panel of educators from outside of the school system (including retirees) will observe and interview the three finalists to determine the 2003 Coweta County Teacher of the Year.

The Teacher of the Year ceremony is May 12 at 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Newnan, during which the system Teacher of the Year will be announced, and all 27 Coweta County Teachers of the Year will be honored by the Coweta County Board of Education, the Newnan Pilot Club, and local businesses. The Times-Herald of Newnan and Regions Bank will once again be Teacher of the Year sponsors.

This year's Coweta County Teacher of the Year is Dale Sizemore, who is an art teacher at Newnan High School. Coweta's 2001 TOTY, Lorraine Johnson, is currently Georgia's Teacher of the Year and one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year. She is one of twelve Georgia semifinalists from Coweta since 1986, including two (Nancy Royal and Jamie Lipscomb) who also went on to be selected as Georgia Teacher of the Year.

The Coweta County School System is the only school system in Georgia with three state teachers of the year.
