African American Cowboy visits Camp Creek Middle School Lacey Curry, the owner of Henderson Arena in College Park, visited three sixth grade classrooms at Camp Creek recently to talk about African American cowboys. The students had been doing research on various famous cowboys, and Curry came to add information. He showed a video on rodeos and described cowboy attire. Since Henderson Arena sponsors both African American and Latin American rodeos, Curry described those events also. Curry talked about two prominent cowboys in particular: Bill Pickett and the first African American stagecoach owner known as "Shotgun Mary." He also talked about the importance of reading to one's future success and about the veterinary science career. Curry works with volunteer youth at the Arena and also coaches youth baseball. Suzette Harris planned the cowboy research unit for her language arts classes and invited Curry to present.
