Fayetteville sets special events

Fayetteville is participating in Georgia Cities Week April 20-26, city officials announced recently. Two events are being planned and coordinated through the efforts of the Main Street and Planning and Zoning Departments.

The city will host its first Development of Excellence Award breakfast Tuesday, April 22. Designed to recognize outstanding work in specific areas related to development, city officials anticipate the breakfast to be an annual event. Some of the examples of the categories that will be awarded include Best Architecture, Best Signage in Main Street District, Most Pedestrian Friendly Development, Best Restoration Project, and Best Mixed-Use Development.

The Fayette County High School government class will take over the council chambers Thursday, April 24, for its own "mock" city council meeting immediately following lunch. Selected students from Peter Lewin's government class will represent elected officials, city staff and developers as they discuss the downtown LCI (Livable Centers Initiative) plan. This will be the third year that the city has worked with the high school government class on this project.

The week is sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, nonprofit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefits and consulting services to its 494 member cities.
