New summer golf programs

The Peachtree City Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Whitewater Golf Club, will be offering a number of new golf programs for kids and adults this summer.

For the kids, there will be a number of week-long programs that will combine teaching with some fun and games. The first one is May 26-29 from 1-3 p.m. each day. They are open to kids ages 6-16, and the fee is $85. Dates on the later camps will be available soon.

For the adults, there are group lesson programs and a 9-hole evening league. The lessons will stress basic swing fundamentals, and the groups will be small enough to allow some one-on-one instruction. Each program includes five one-hour lessons, taught once a week (either Tuesday evenings or Sunday afternoons.) These programs will help the beginner or more experienced player improve and enjoy the game even more. The first sessions start Tuesday, April 15, and Sunday, April 27. The second sessions start Tuesday, May 27, and Sunday, June 1. The cost of each session is $85.

Even with lessons, though, there's only one way to get better at golf - you've got to play. The new weekly league program will give you the opportunity to play on a regular basis in a competitive yet fun atmosphere. Sign up with your regular group, or come in by yourself and let us put you in a group. Each week will be a separate event that will take your handicap into account and use a "Stableford" point system to keep score.

You must participate in at least six of the ten events to qualify for the league prizes. At the end of the ten weeks there will be a league barbeque party where the league prizes are handed out. The $30 registration fee covers the postseason awards and the league party. There will be a weekly fee of $20, to be paid before the start of play each week to Whitewater G.C., to cover the greens fees and your cart.

If you have any questions about these or any of our athletic programs, call Jim O'Connell at the Parks and Recreation Department, 770-631-2542.
